Nyungnay – Purification Retreat

Nyungnay Purification Retreat

April 14th & 15th

In celebration of Buddha’s Enlightenment Day we will engage in Nyungnay Purifying Ritual Practice, a special two-day fasting purification practice to emphasize compassion for all living beings. You can attend either one or both days of retreat.  There is no cost to attend this retreat
You must attend Precepts to attend any of the sessions for that day.

What is Nyungnay?

A special fasting and purification practice performed in conjunction with Eleven-faced (or Thousand-armed) Avalokiteshvara. This is a very powerful method for purifying negativity of body, speech, and mind, and for pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred. It is also a special way of receiving blessings and for improving our minds of love, compassion, and bodhichitta. This practice is done annually at Kadampa Buddhist centers throughout the world in a two-day retreat—called the Nyungnay Purifying Ritual Practice—to celebrate Buddha’s Enlightenment Day.

There is no charge for this retreat. You can participate in one or both days. You must attend the 6:30am precepts of each day that you are attending.

When we take the eight Mahayana precepts, we explicitly promise to abstain for twenty-four hours from eight actions:

  1. Killing
  2. Stealing
  3. Sexual activity
  4. Lying
  5. Taking intoxicants
  6. Eating after lunch (meaning we only eat lunch.)
  7. Sitting on high or luxurious thrones or seats
  8. Wearing ornaments, perfume, etc, and singing and dancing, etc.
